The Brew News for January 21, 2011

It is Friday, and that means we can get excited about our weekend plans and recap some of the best news from this past sunny week.  With great San Diego weather comes tons of awesome news stories and local events to check out. Seriously there are SO many beer events next week you may just have to take some vacation days to enjoy them all. ;-)

National Beer News:
Congrats to Lagunitas, Stone, Abita, Brooklyn and Dogfish Head for their stellar success in 2010. This article mentions all of these breweries but specifically focused on Lagunitas Brewing which was up 38% in 2010.  The people (or their taste-buds) have spoken. I look forward to seeing the continued growth and success of of all great craft-breweries in 2011.  (www.beernews.org)

On the tails of that last article, the definition of “craft brewery” has changed this week.  Small craft breweries can now produce 6 million barrels of beer a year. Read this article about the changes and why it is a good thing for beer lovers. (www.mysanantonio.com)

There is a new documentary in the works about Colorado’s craft beer scene titled “Beer Culture”. Check out this trailer and get excited for the summer release.

After reading the headline: “Bottoms Up Draft Beer Dispensing System”, I was greatly intrigued about a new dispensing system that fills cups from the bottom up. Pretty cool…now how can I get this installed in my kitchen? Check out the video for proof. (www.blogaboutbeer.com)

San Diego Beer News:
Tailgate brewery,a brewery that began with local roots, made some big changes this week. Tailgate (started by Wesley Keegan, SDSU graduate), started canning it’s Blacktop Blonde Ale. (www.signonsandiego.com)

Ballast Point had a beer dinner at The Grill at Torrey Pines.  Westcoaster has posted a great recap, complete with photos.  Check it out. (www.westcoastersd.com)

Make fabulous weekend brunch with some new recipes from the Karl Blog. Enjoy some Windansea Wheat French Toast or Red Trolley Sausage Gravy. I’d pair it with a beer-mosa and call it a fabulous day!

About:  Hess Brewing has brewed up a special “West Coaster IPA” just for this event.  Rumor is that it is big, hoppy, and perfect for San Diego beer lovers.  They even made custom glasses just for that night.  Coronado Brewing will also be releasing a few new beers at the party.  Don’t miss this one!

    Nice beer site guys! While I am on the other coast, I have been highlighting locally-brewed beers in Rochester with the same aim as you discuss on your About page. We went to a happy hour a few weeks ago to help a friend promote his local / tiny brew…. Great stuff… Cheers…
