Craft Beer, Cupcakes, & Cans are WINNING!

The Brew News is a weekly column that recaps some of our favorite national and local craft beer news from a variety of sources.  It also lists upcoming beer-related events for the next week.

Brew News March 7th- Craft Beer, Cupcakes, & Cans are WINNING!

It is March and there is a chill in the air. The crisp weather makes me want to snuggle up, grab my favorite beer and…catch up on all the beer news I missed (of course!).  Personally I think all of these stories from the past two weeks are WINNING!!  ;-)

National Beer News:
Scientist are going to start studying the oldest beer in the world. It was brewed in the early 1800s. Researchers will be doing a DNA analysts of the beer to study all its characteristics.

Anheuser-Busch InBev just reported their earnings reports for 2010. I’d be lying if I didn’t say I was a little happy to see profit was down from last year. Not just down but 24% down. That means craft beer is winning!!!

I know cans are in our future but I’m still surprised to read this latest story. Beernews reports that Sierra Nevada is going to start canning their beer later this year. Sierra Nevada will start canning their pale ale in addition to the regular bottles. The company says cans are simply more practical.

Check out this sweet new documentary that just finished up filming this month: For the Love Of Beer. Yup, a new craft beer documentary devoted entirely to women & beer!

San Diego Beer News:

It is not only the craft beer scene in San Diego that is thriving but also the home brew community. This next article talks about one home brewer and the great local resources he has found in North Park.

Two of my favorite things come together again! Cupcakes & Beer!!! This week the Karl Blog has a delicious beer cupcake recipes with a nice shout out to PubCakes. Seriously, they always have the best beer recipes, Karl = Winning!

What: Ballast Point & Green Flash Total Tap Takeover!
Where: Urge GastroPub
When: Wednesday, March 9th @ 3pm
About: There will be 30 Ballast Point Taps, 21 Green Flash Taps, and a commemorative pint glass. Check out Urge’s Twitter for pictures of the special glass.  It looks awesome.

What: Existence Gives Back
Where: Firehouse Brewing Company
When: Saturday, March 12th 5-9pm
About: Come out and support this great charity event showcasing 12 of San Diego’s most influential non-profits. There will be BBQ, music, raffle and beer (of course)! The whole BrewDiego crew will be there so stop by and say hello.  It is 10 dollars and it is cash only.  All proceeds will benefit charity.

What: Stone’s 2011 March Madness Homebrew Competition
Where: Stone Brewing Company
When: Saturday, March 12th @ 1pm
About: Join Stone for a relaxing afternoon in the garden while sipping on a delicious homebrew. There were 40 entries this year. Check the website for all the details.

What: 2nd Annual Mission Valley Craft Beer Festival
Where: Handlery Hotel & Resort
When: Sunday, March 27th, 12-6pm
About: So this event isn’t this week, but make sure you get your tickets now for the 2nd Annual Mission Valley Craft Beer Festival. Just a friendly reminder.

Don’t let the long blonde hair and innocent smile fool you. This girl understands beer and she knows what she wants. Her favorite styles of beer include pale ales, blondes, and Belgians.
